Tokyo has become really good lately at repurposing old, disused buildings and bringing them back to life. Maach Ecute, close to Akihabara, is a perfect example of this. A heritage railways station that trains stopped running to in 1943, has been redeveloped into a design-savvy shopping and dining precinct.
Maach Ecute contains bars, restaurants, design shops, a micro-brewery and a craft coffee shop. Its all housed in a perfectly restored arched brick building running alongside a canal. Along with the stations’s well-retained heritage features, there’s a scale model of the station in its heyday on view.
Perhaps its best feature is the café located upstairs on the original station platform. You climb up to it on the original station stairs. At the cafe you can sit and enjoy food and drinks right where the trains used to stop, while watching other trains continue to run just across the tracks.
