Ever wondered what Tokyo was like in the 1800’s at the end of the Edo era? The Fukagawa Edo Museum in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa brings that period to life with a full-size reproduction of a Tokyo neighbourhood from that time.
Entering the museum is like stepping into history, or at least onto the authentic set of a historical movie. You become fully immersed, wandering the replica alleyways and stepping into the shops, homes and storehouses of the bygone era. A colour changing skyline and atmospheric sound effects heighten the illusion.
Enthusiastic volunteer guides are available to educate you on the various buildings and the neighbourhood life of that time. While their assistance is optional, you’ll get a lot more out of the experience if you let them talk you through the exhibits, as their commentary provides a lot of insight.
While you will only need to spend an hour or so there, the Fukagawa Edo Museum is a wonderfully entertaining and informative museum. Couple it with a visit to historic garden Kiyosumi Teien, which is a short walk away.
