Ueno Park is a huge public park in northern Tokyo that greets 10 million visitors per year. It houses a large pond with a temple at its centre, several shrines and many of the city’s major museums within its grounds. These include The National Science Museum, National Museum for Western Art and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. The Tokyo National Museum and Tokyo’s first zoological garden Ueno Zoo are also located within its perimeter.
Ueno Park sits on land that was originally the grounds of a temple. It opened as a public park in the late 1880’s as Japan became more influenced by Western urban planning.
While it’s not the most beautiful park in Tokyo in terms of greenery, it’s popular for cherry blossom viewing during spring. There are over 800 cheery trees throughout the park which look amazing in bloom. In summer, the pond’s surface is covered in huge, pink lotus flowers.
There’s numerous food outlets within Ueno Park and an amphitheatre that holds concerts and other entertainment. There’s also a smaller pond that has paddle and rowing boats for hire.
