Hanayashiki is Tokyo’s oldest amusement park. Located in Asakusa, just behind Sensoji Temple, the park has been operating since 1853. While it was originally a flower park, rides and amusements were added in 1872, including exotic birds and animals. Tiger quintuplets and the first lion in Japan were born there in the early 1900s.
These days it’s home to over 20 amusements and attractions, some vintage and some more modern, within its historic setting. These include a giant drop ride, a pedal coaster, a haunted house and a rollercoaster that wraps around the perimeter of the park, among other carnival rides. The rollercoaster, despite its low height and 1950’s heritage is surprisingly thrilling.
One of the most noteworthy and unique attractions is the ‘panda cars’, which are giant furry pandas you can sit atop and steer as they ‘walk’ along on all fours around the grounds.
There’s also a Japanese Festival area where you can try out traditional cultural games and activities, like throwing ninja stars. You can also experience being a ninja, wearing a kimono or having a Japanese tea ceremony for an added fee.
You need to pay an admission fee to enter the park and you can purchase either a free ride pass to experience everything or purchase individual attraction tickets.
While Hanayashiki feels rather dated and kitschy, that’s all part of the charm and the fun.
