Tokyo Skytree is the newest addition to the city’s observation viewing options. Opened in 2012, the 634 metre structure towers over the skyline and you can see it from virtually anywhere in the city. Modelled after the shape of a traditional five-storey pagoda, it’s the tallest structure in Japan. It’s lit up beautifully at night too.
Skytree features two observation decks, one at 350 metres and a higher one at 450 metres. The lower observation area, called the Tembo Deck, features a souvenir shop, café and fine dining restaurant across three levels. Glass panels in the floor of the viewing area offer a thrilling look to the ground below.
Tembo Galleria is the upper observation deck. It’s selling point is a spiralling ramp that winds around the structure between two levels and up to the deck’s highest viewing point.
International visitors can purchase a Fast Skytree Ticket for express entry. You need to purchase it at the Fast Skytree Ticket Counter on the 4th floor and will need to present your passport(s). Although it’s a little more expensive than a regular ticket, the value is in the reduced waiting time.
Tokyo Skytree Town, at the base of the tower, will keep you entertained before or after you go up. It’s a fully-fledged shopping, dining and entertainment precinct that also includes an aquarium. So aim to spend some time there too.
Tokyo Skytree’s location on the outskirts of the city means the views are not quite as interesting as those offered from the more centrally-located Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, Tokyo City View and Tokyo Tower. However, it is a great place to get a sense of the sheer expanse of the metropolis from on high.
Tokyo’s old entertainment district Asakusa is nearby, so couple your visit with the attractions there.
