Pedestrians crossing in multiple directions at Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo

Shibuya Crossing

Posted on October 4, 2019February 4, 2020

Shibuya Crossing, one of Tokyo’s most famous landmarks, is also one of it’s most unlikely. After all it’s only a pedestrian crossing. Yet the multi-direction scramble intersection has become iconic as a well-known Tokyo symbol. It is also one of the busiest pedestrian thoroughfares in the world. Tourists visit day and night to see the ordered chaos. At busy times, sometimes thousands of people cross in multiple directions at once.

The crossing, which is flanked by towering buildings with billboards and screens, links Shibuya Station to the shopping and entertainment areas Shibuya is popular for.

If you want a view of the crossing from above, visit the paid viewing platform at the top of the Shibuya 109-2 department store. You can also nab a window seat at Starbucks inside the Shibuya Tsutaya store across the road from the station.
