Golden Gai is one of the must-see sights on a trip to Tokyo. Located in the Shinjuku district, it’s a collection of tiny and ramshackle alleyway bars that harks back to the post-war era.
There are over 200 bars in the area, many so small they only have seating for a handful of patrons. Each sets itself apart with its décor or theme. Many of them cater only to Japanese locals and their regular guests, so look out for ‘no foreigner’ signs if you plan on trying some out.
Bars that are tourist friendly include Albatross, Kenzo’s Bar and Ace’s, so seek these out if you want to experience some of the bars while you’re there.
Golden Gai is best experienced at night, when the area glows with the lights of the various establishments.
