If you’re a fan of Uniqlo, check out a GU store while you’re in Tokyo. It’s Uniqlo’s cheaper cousin, owned by the same retail company, selling a similar product range at lower prices (and to a degree quality). The brand gets its name from the Japanese word ‘jiyū’ (free), which is used to represent ‘free from high cost’.
While GU has over 400 stores across Japan, it hasn’t gone international yet and is difficult to purchase online from overseas. So, stop in to stock up on seasonal trend fashion and basics like underwear, t-shirts, jeans, outerwear, activewear and accessories. In the winter season you’ll find good quality and affordable puffer jackets and coats too.
End of season stock is often heavily discounted so keep an eye out for the sale racks. Also remember to take your passport along to take advantage of the tax-free shopping on offer.
There are GU stores at various locations across Tokyo, including Shinjuku, Harajuku, Shibuya and the Akihabara area. However, the largest is located in Ginza, not far from Uniqlo’s flagship store (address details below).
