If you’re a fan of the simple and clean aesthetic of Japan’s world-famous ‘no brand’ retailer Muji, don’t miss visiting MUJI GINZA, which opened in 2019. It houses both the brand’s global flagship store and Japan’s first MUJI Hotel across it’s 11 floors.
At street level there’s a working bakery churning out fresh bread and pastries, a tea-blending counter plus a food market selling everything from fresh produce through to snacks, drinks and packaged cook-at-home meals.
Levels 2 to 5 feature the full range of MUJI’s wares, which include fashion, footwear, luggage, homewares, design objects, traditional crafts, stationary and other everyday items. There’ a personalisation service available on Level 4 where you can have your purchases embroidered with a range of different letters and designs. Don’t hesitate to buy here if there’s something you like-the prices are much more reasonable in Japan than in MUJI’s international stores. Tax free shopping is available too-so be sure to bring your passport.
The public areas of MUJI Hotel on Level 6 include a sleek café/bar featuring a mega-long wooden table, a section selling design books and an art space.
If you’re after a meal, head to MUJI Diner in the basement which focuses on hearty home-cooking and farm-fresh produce in a large, relaxing space.
One of the most impressive things about the flagship is just how comprehensively the brand’s signature design style has been applied to the interiors and merchandising throughout. They’ve really created a MUJI ‘world’ that envelops you from the moment you step in. If the understated comfort appeals, why not book ahead and stay upstairs at MUJI Hotel too.
