Roppongi Hills is a massive commercial and entertainment precinct in Roppongi that opened in 2003. Centred around the 54-story Mori Tower office building, it’s multiple levels of plazas and buildings house shops, bars, restaurants, cinemas and gardens. The Grand Hyatt Hotel is part of the complex and directly connects to the shopping and dining precincts.
Mori Tower includes the excellent Tokyo City View observation deck and rooftop plus the Mori Art Museum, which offers sky-high contemporary art exhibitions, on its upper levels.
Closer to ground, the public plaza areas feature fountains, a rose-garden and notable sculptures from internationally renowned artists. Don’t miss the gigantic bronze spider designed by Louise Bourgeois. There are also great views out to Tokyo Tower.
The ground level features Mori Garden, a Japanese landscape garden complete with a pond, a large covered amphitheatre that hold regular events and the headquarters of television station TV Asahi. If you’re lucky, you might see them filming a TV show through the studio windows.
Raised footbridges at the back of Roppongi Hills connect the commercial and entertainment precincts to several luxury residential towers. It’s worth taking a walk along these as well to see how the rich of Tokyo live.
