Kiyosumi Teien is perhaps Tokyo’s most beautiful traditional garden, located in residential Kiyosumi Shirakawa in the city’s east. It was created in the late 1800’s by a shipping magnate who founded Mitsubishi. The Mitsubishi company then donated the garden to Tokyo City in 1932.
The tranquil, manicured garden features strolling pathways that wend their way around the perimeter of a large lake. Highlights include three islands that are accessible by bridges and a lovely tea house that juts out over the water. Stepping stones lead visitors across the water at various points, offering a chance to view the ducks, koi and turtles that live in it up close.
Kiyosumi Teien is famous for its proliferation of large boulders that feature throughout the garden. They were sourced from across Japan during construction and transported to the site to give the landscape character.
Visitors in Autumn can experience the garden at night, with its red, yellow and orange foliage artfully lit up on a number of evenings. Check the website for dates each year.
