A stroll along Omotesando, Tokyo’s answer to the Champs-Elysees, isn’t complete without a look through Omotesando Hills. It’s an upscale shopping mall that stretches 250 metres along the boulevard.
The mall was designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando and utilises brutal formed concrete in his signature style. It’s low-rise and angular and totally worth visiting for the architecture alone. Inside there’s an array of stores on a network of ramps stacked around an impressive atrium. Outside, the street-facing stores always have interesting window displays.
You’ll need a healthy bank account to shop there as there’s a definite focus on luxury fashion and beauty goods. The roster of stores includes Balmain, Chloe, Dior, Harry Winston, Jimmy Choo and Valentino alongside local Japanese brands.
There’s also over 15 refined food and beverage stores, offering everything from sit down meals to more casual drinks and sweets.
Omotesando Hills is particularly beautiful at Christmas time, with the atrium decorated for the season. The display changes every year.
