The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku is one of the best places to get bird’s eye views of Tokyo. Even better-its free. The impressive building features observation decks 200 metres up in both its North and South Towers.
The observation decks offer panoramic views of Tokyo and beyond. You might even see Mt Fuji if the weather is good. Be aware that you need to pass through security screening before boarding the elevator to go up.
The South Tower observatory features a gift shop and also a grand piano decorated by world-famous Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Anyone visiting is free to play it, so you’ll never be sure what soundtrack you’ll get with the views.
In addition, there’s a tourist information on the second floor of the building with extensive travel resources and staff to assist you. There is also a 2020 Olympics countdown clock and Tokyo’s Olympic mascots in the foyer.
Note that the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building North Tower observatory is closed for renovation through to February 2020.
