The area immediately around Shibuya Station has been a major construction zone for many years, with locals and tourists forced to navigate temporary tunnels and footbridges beside building hoardings to reach the attractions of the area. The building works, aimed to revitalise the area, are now thankfully nearing completion. Shibuya Stream was the second of the major developments to open when it completed in 2018, following Shibuya Hikarie which was finished in 2012. Shibuya Scramble Square, which opened in 2019, has completed the trio of major new buildings that ring the station area.
Shibuya Stream is named for the narrow canal that runs alongside the development. It’s not a pretty or major waterway, more of a shallow trickle at the bottom of a deep concrete pit, but a ‘waterside’ promenade with cafes and restaurants sits alongside it all the same.
For tourists, the main drawcards are the architecture of the Shibuya Stream development, which is sleek, inventive and decidedly modern and the 30 or so shops and restaurants that occupy its first four floors. There are numerous local and international drinking and dining spots on offer at varying price-points, so it’s a good place to check out if you’re looking for an easy meal.
